Aleppo Heritage Hackathon: Using 3D Printing to Rebuild and Preserve the City’s Past
Field Ready for Humanitarian Innovation, in collaboration with the Aleppo Directorate of Culture and hosted by Kids Paradise, is launching a two-day hackathon to mobilize young talent around the reconstruction and preservation of Aleppo’s cultural heritage through 3D printing.
Why this hackathon?
Aleppo’s architectural memory is a cornerstone of the city’s identity and recovery. As neighborhoods rebuild, there is a growing need for practical, low-cost, and context-appropriate solutions that can document damaged assets, reproduce non-structural elements, and support awareness and education. 3D printing—paired with local design skills—offers fast, iterative ways to prototype, test, and refine ideas that respect cultural integrity while enabling scalable action.

The call is open to students and young professionals in:
- Engineering
- Architecture
- Design
- Fine Arts
- Anyone passionate about heritage and innovation
Participants will work in small, multidisciplinary teams.
What you’ll do over two days
- Heritage orientation: Short sessions introducing Aleppo’s architectural heritage and conservation basics.
- 3D printing primer: Modeling, slicing, materials, and rapid prototyping.
- Mentored sprints: Hands-on guidance from technical and cultural mentors.
- Pitch & feedback: Present to a specialized panel for selection and constructive feedback.
Focus areas for ideas
- Documenting damaged heritage buildings and elements
- Reproducing non-structural heritage components for education, display, or community engagement
- Educational and awareness tools that bring Aleppo’s heritage to life
Awards & what comes next
The two best ideas will be recognized with symbolic prizes. Shortlisted teams will be introduced to a post-hackathon incubation path aimed at:
- Technical and conceptual development
- Links to innovation spaces and partners
- Strengthening feasibility and potential future implementation
